Booming Sound and Solid Performance

The Onkyo TX-SR373 packs a punch with its Dolby TrueHD and DTS-HD Master Audio, which are features that are commonly found in more expensive receivers. Both functions ensure that the audio recreated from the music or video stream is almost identical to the original artist’s rendition, giving you the ultimate experience.

Although it doesn’t support some of the latest audio formats like the Dolby Atmos and DTS:X, the sound difference is almost non-existent. It can produce up to 80 watts per channel at 8 Ohms, which gives you more than enough headroom to play numerous music genres with a large dynamic range.

It also comes with an AccuEQ sound optimization system so you can tailor the sound to your room’s specific acoustics. It achieves this feat by automatically scanning the room to build up a virtual picture of what it looks like. It then fine-tunes itself to eliminate any standing waves and balance the surround-sound.

The Advanced Music Optimizer allows you to manually adjust the sound to your liking if you’re not satisfied by the automated result. Furthermore, for rhythm games, such as Guitar Hero, the Onkyo TX-SR373 has a “Direct” option that pauses processing, thus eliminating input lag.

These features really show you that Onkyo takes sound quality seriously, even with their budget-friendly models.

Has All the Ports You Need, Plus More!

The Onkyo TX-SR373 has a total of 11 inputs to allow you to connect most devices to it. It comes with 4 HDMI inputs for DVD and Blu-ray players, along with TV set-top boxes and game consoles. All are 4K enabled, too! If you prefer to power the unit using a TV output, you set it up using its 2 digital inputs.

To top it off, the Onkyo TX-SR373 also has 2 sets of audiovisual and audio phonos, with built-in Bluetooth and FM/AM tuners. Other inputs include USB ports, radio ports for AM and FM, and analog inputs for BD/DVD, cable, and CDs.

Pros

Other than the affordable price, the Onkyo TX-SR373 delivers an expansive Hi-Fi sound.

I also quite like its wide-range Bluetooth technology, as it wirelessly allows you to connect your phone to play music and watch movies on whatever device you’re paired with. If your device supports Qualcomm aptX codec, it’ll be able to produce almost lossless playback with low-latency.

Another plus is the Advanced Music Optimizer, as it enriches any compressed audio you send to the Onkyo TX-SR373 to give you a much more satisfying musical experience.

You can further enhance the sound produced by the receiver by using Onkyo’s Direct mode, where the audio from the input source is replicated as-is, without any special effects to amplify or distort the sound.

Cons

It’s difficult to find a con for this receiver without nitpicking, especially at the price it comes with.

One major thing that does irk me, however, is the fact that you can only connect one Bluetooth device at a time. Although it’s not really that big of a deal, I still find it inconvenient. After all, having to unpair your phone just to connect to another takes a considerable amount of time. Plus, it won’t allow you to connect your extra speakers with your receiver.

When it comes to sound, I found that there’s a slight issue with the midranges clarity, which slightly impacts the prominence of an instrument when listening to music. This is especially true when you’re listening to instrument-heavy music like metal and pop.

It could be attributed to the fact that the Onkyo TX-SR373 doesn’t support the latest audio format. Then again, it’s unrealistic to expect a $1000 sound from a ~$300 receiver.

What Customer Reviews Say

The Onkyo TX-SR373 currently has just over 350 reviews on Amazon, with a rating of 4.2 out of 5 stars. 66% of customers rated this unit 5 star, while 12% gave it 1 star. That’s a pretty good ratio, all things considered.

Most users praise the Onkyo TX-SR373 for its powerful sound performance and build quality, with many claiming that it’s one of the best budget-friendly home theater choices on the market.

The Bluetooth feature is especially mentioned; despite some complaining about it only being able to be paired with one device at a time, it still has an overall respectable connection range.

Other than that, plenty of reviewers found that it was fairly easy to incorporate in their setup. For the price it comes with, they claim it’s truly difficult to beat.

Conclusion

The Onkyo TX-SR373 is proof that you can improve your home theater experience without breaking the bank. This entry-level AV receiver performs incredibly well when compared to models at the same price range.

It doesn’t have a ton of “premium” features, but for most of us, that’s not a major flaw. Plus, it gives you all the freedom to customize and adjust the sound if you’re not satisfied with the automated settings.
